Howdy folks! It’s The Kendog!

As an unapologetic fan of Christopher Nolan I find it difficult sometimes to approach his films from a subjective standpoint. That said, I don’t the man has made a bad, or even mediocre movie to this point in his career. Nolan has his detractors, to be sure, but I have to base any criticism of Nolan based on what is onscreen and not what others say about him. There are those who don’t like his latest INTERSTELLAR, but I’ll be damned if I could figure out why. For yours truly, INTERSTELLAR may be one of the finest science fiction films ever made, able to stand side by side with its cinematic inspiration, 2001: A SPACE ODESSEY.

Sometimes something totally original comes along in movies that blows your hair back and sets cinema on its ear. After reading early reviews of BIRDMAN, I thought that Michael Keaton’s latest would be one of those events. After viewing the film I can say that for the most part, my fellow critics are correct. BIRDMAN is one of the most original pieces of film I’ve ever encountered in a theater. That said, Alexander Gonzalez Inarittu’s (BABEL, 21 GRAMS) latest is also cluttered and unnecessarily loud.

Movies with unlikeable protagonists are common in cinema, but to do them well and make said unlikeable leads sympathetic takes real talent and a real commitment to the role. In that writer/director Dan Gilroy and actor Jake Gyllenhaal have done something quite remarkable with NIGHTCRAWLER, a film that explores the seedy underside of Los Angeles in a similar vein to the films of Michael Mann. The result is an incredibly entertaining character study combined with some equally compelling thriller elements.

It’s always nice to see established stars stretch their muscles from an acting standpoint. Bill Murray has been taking offbeat roles for years in a mostly successful effort to distance himself from the crazy comic actor persona he cultivated early in his career. Melissa McCarthy, however, is in danger of becoming typecast as the “overweight crazy chick who can’t run.” Movies like TAMMY and IDENTITY THIEF threaten to undermine her massive comic talent. So to say that McCarthy’s turn in the excellent ST VINCENT is a breath of fresh air is an understatement. In fact, it’s the performances by McCarthy, Murray, and the entire cast that elevate ST VINCENT from a by the numbers drama to something special!

Haven’t seen Keanu Reeves in a while. Aside from the underrated MAN OF TAI CHI, available for streaming on Netflix, Reeves has been, to say the least, under the radar. I know he has his detractors and no one is ever gonna confused Reeves for Sir Laurence Olivier, but as an action star he is, in my humble opinion, extremely underrated. So it’s with great pleasure that I report Reeves has returned to form with the incredible JOHN WICK, one of the most entertaining shoot-em ups I’ve seen in ages.
